What is Baby Massage?
Baby massage is a wonderful parenting tool that provides you and your family with a positive, nurturing, loving life skill.
It is much more than a method for simply relaxing a baby, it is an exercise that has been used in many parts of the world for over 3000 years - related article
"It is a means of communication, drawing on the senses of touch, sight, sound and smell to help caregivers and their babies to get to know and understand each other.
When massaging a baby, both carer and child are working with each other, in a mutually respectful communication that utilises a range of senses.
Since the mid to late 1990’s baby massage has become very popular in the UK, with more emphasis placed on physical bonding and attachment between the parent and the baby. More and more professionals are now realising the importance of baby massage and are encouraging parents to make baby massage a daily part of their routine.
Through the work of baby massage pioneers such as Vimala McClure and Peter Walker, infant massage is now emerging as ‘the’ must do activity and is helping thousands of parents bond with their babies and provide the best possible start in life both physically and emotionally." - Hands on Babies
"Excellent – I have been to Gemma for the prenatal massages, which were lovely and relaxing and she really listened to what I needed. We then followed up in taking my baby to the baby massage class. It was the perfect mix of fun and relaxing, for both baby and caregiver. A lovely environment to learn something that helps you bond with baby, but Gemma’s approach means it was also a good environment to have an adult chat." - Rosie

What if my baby cries?
Baby always comes first, at beau-babies we welcome crying as a normal part of the massage class, and so if your baby becomes unsettled for any reason and cries, I will help you in whatever way you need to address your baby’s needs. Bearing in mind baby will be in a new surrounding, with a new faces, new sounds and voices, they may become overstimulated - not to worry, we will only begin massage if baby wants to be massaged - there is no right or wrong way for babies to respond to massage, we will look out for baby's engagement cues, offer still touch and introduce them calmly - once they are settled and in the 'quiet alert state' we will ask baby's permission and only begin once we know baby is happy to go ahead.
I attended baby massage classes run by Gemma with my 4 month old and it was the best thing I ever did!! She created such a calm welcoming environment that I looked forward to each weekly session. She is so personable and makes you feel so comfortable with your baby that I felt I was spending time among friends. She does not shy away from sharing her knowledge and as a result I have learnt a skill for life and bonded with my baby so well. Thanks Gemma wish you all the best!! – Shamaela
